ICLEI South Asia Facilitates Technical Training and Exposure Visit to Innovative Solid Waste Treatment Processes in Germany

The GIZ Regional Urban Nexus project, financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) offered an opportunity for introducing and building the capacities of the officials on innovative solid waste treatment process at Ringsheim, Germany. Officials from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, NITI Aayog and the State Government of Karnataka were part of the tour.

The four-day training programme introduced innovative technology like Maximum Yield Technology (MYT/MBT); its application and usage of the end products to the participants. The training was designed to provide basic understanding regarding the mechanical biological waste treatment including end usage of refuse-derived fuels in various cement plants and paper plants.

Realising that the segregation practices are not so robust in India as compared to European countries, the MYT facility at Kahlenberg site that utilises mixed waste as feedstock was specially chosen for the site visit.

The industry experts from Zweckverband Abfallbehandlung Kahlenberg (ZAK) discussed and provided detailed know-how of the technology and associated units like leachate treatment facility, co-generation unit, biomass heating and power station.

Apart from the MYT plant, two plants (paper plant and cement plant) were also visited by the officials to understand the utilisation of refuse derived fuels as alternative to coal. The training focused on technical, financial, operational and monitoring and evaluation aspects of the technology along with site visits to give a hands-on experience to the officials.

Impressed by the technology, the officials also explored options for technology-transfer thereby making it suitable for Indian conditions.

The participants for the visit included Mr. V.K Chaurasia, Adviser, CPHEEO, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Mr. S.K. Singh and Ms. Manshi Singh from NITI Aayog, Mr. C.P. Singh, Municipal Commissioner, Ghaziabad, Mr. A.B. Ibrahim, IAS, Managing Director, KUIDFC, Mr. A. R. Ravi, Joint Director (Planning), Urban Development Department, Karnataka and Mr. Manu Kumar, Assistant Environmental Engineer, Directorate of Municipal Administration, Karnataka.
