ICLEI South Asia has been undertaking segregated waste collection in two wards of Jaisalmer and Kishangarh cities in Rajasthan, for the past six months. As a next step under the European Commission funded AdoptIUWM project, the cities have now taken the initiative to undertake composting for management of wet waste.
In Kishangarh, ICLEI South Asia – in partnership with Kishangarh Municipal Council – initiated segregated door-to-door waste collection in two wards of the city (Ward No.17 & 28). Under this initiative, nearly 450 households and 100 commercial units are being covered and four-way segregation of waste is currently being undertaken. The estimated wet waste collection from 450 households and 100 shops is around 250 to 300 kg per day. Recyclables are collected separately and are sold to local kabadiwalas. The segregation achieved at present is nearly 85 to 95 Percent and the user fee recovery at Rs. 30/month has also been achieved in nearly 90 percent households. In December 2016, six vermi compost beds with a total capacity of 6,000 kg have been installed in the outskrits of the city. These compost beds would feed compost facility presently under construction at the same site. ICLEI South Asia is also providing training support to the Municipal staff under Swachh Bharat Mission. In December 2016, a training for nearly 15 Municipal sweepers was organised by ICLEI South Asia for providing handholding support on waste segregation and collection.

In a similar initiative, Jaisalmer city – in partnership with ICLEI South Asia - is undertaking segregated waste collection in two wards (Ward No.4-The fort area and Ward No.5). Municipal sweepers have been trained in the city to collect segregated waste from more than 900 households (contributing to nearly 180 kg of wet waste per day). A vermi compost plant with 10 vermi beds with the capacity of 1000 kg each has been installed in the outskirt of the city on PPP basis. Compost from this plant will be sold to the local farmers. The first batch of compost is expected to be ready in February.
