Bihar capital Patna is now an ICLEI Member

Patna, the capital city of Indian state of Bihar, has just joined ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability South Asia as a Member city.

Located on the south bank of the Ganges River, Patna is the second largest city in eastern India, after Kolkata. It had an estimated population of 1.68 million in 2011, making it the 19th largest city in India.

Patna Sahib, a neighbourhood in Patna is regarded as very sacred by the Sikhs in India. The tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh was born there.

Patna city also boasts the fundamental challenges of urban development and grappling with the population surge, and to ensure quality of basic municipal services delivery to its citizens. Quite recently, the Member City had been short-listed among 500 cities across India for Governments of India's Urban rejuvenation mission called AMRUT.

Mr. Afjal Imam, Hon'ble Mayor of Patna, says, "It is certainly a proud moment for City of Patna to be part of ICLEI - Local Governments of Sustainability. The city looks forward to learn from vast experience of ICLEI on urban transformation."
