Budapest Water Summit Civil Forum recognises integrated urban water management as major step towards resilience

ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability South Asia advocated the cause for focus on urban water sector management through Integrated Urban Water Management at the Budapest Water Summit in November 2016. ICLEI South Asia, the key implementer of the European Commission funded project on Adopting Integrated Urban Water Management in Indian Cities (AdoptIUWM), presented the project activities during a session on "Arteries of a living settlement: water for all in urban planning" at the Civil Forum.

Achievements under the AdoptIUWM pilot projects for revival of traditional pond in Jaisalmer (Rajasthan), recharge of abandoned borewells in Solapur, Maharashtra and a school sanitation project in Kishangarh, Rajasthan were highlighted. The presentation was appreciated by the participants and a need for replication of such initiatives for achieving sustainable development was reflected at the event. Subsequent to the presentation, ICLEI South Asia also advocated the focus on IUWM at the Closing Planery discussions. The Budapest Water Summit Statement for the Civil Forum released in January 2017 has endorsed this focus on urbanization and IUWM:

“Urbanization is one of the fastest ongoing transformations in society therefore, robust planning of urban water infrastructure, preserving supporting natural habitats and an Integrated Urban Water Management are important parts of a resilient system providing safe environment for millions”.
