A Workshop on Urban Biodiversity: An Opportunity to Promote Nature Based Solutions

With unprecedented urbanization, healthy and interconnected “green spaces” and different ecosystems – lakes, wetlands, urban forests and parks – as part of “urban biodiversity” can play a critical role to solve our material (water stress, air pollution, heat islands, pest control, natural disaster mitigation) and spiritual (place to relax and understand us and the world) issues, naturally.
To understand and promote the role of nature-based solutions, Leaders for Nature, in partnership with ICLEI-South Asia, INTACH, The Climate Reality Project, and ESPA (British High Commission, India), is organising a workshop on June 16, followed by a field visit on June 17, in New Delhi. The event aims to highlight different issues of urban biodiversity and their association with pollution levels, water stress, urban heat islands, impact on local micro-climate as well as its association with health and wellbeing of citizens.
June 17 is also World Day to Combat Desertification. This year, the day advocates for the importance of inclusive cooperation to restore and rehabilitate degraded land and contribute towards achieving the overall Sustainable Development Goals.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
- Organization of conferences, seminars, training courses tailored to the needs of local government experts.
