Rapid urbanization brings with it many managerial and policy challenges like effective governance and planning, infrastructural availability, policies and sustainable development. Estimates indicate that by 2030, urbanization in India will reach to about 40%: provision for affordable housing and slum rehabilitation together with social inclusion, multi modal transport integration, land use and its efficiency are thus crucial areas to guarantee an effective model of urban development. The Indian State of Gujarat – which has seen an unprecedented upsurge in economic growth and urbanization over the last few years – has consistently converted impending challenges into opportunities.
“Vibrant Gujarat 2013: National Summit on Inclusive Urban Development”, taking place on 17 October 2013 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, will showcase many of these success stories, as well as provide the latest views of national and international experts on the country’s urban development needs, and opportunities for investments with a focus on new and innovative ways to finance, design and build projects for inclusive urban development.
The event, organized by the Urban Development and Urban Housing Department Government of Gujarat, in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), PwC and ICLEI South Asia, will bring together senior Government officials, policy and decision makers, development institutions, urban planners and related stakeholders to discuss sustainable urban development paradigms. During the sessions on Affordable housing, Urban planning, Multi-modal transport, Basic urban amenities, Social inclusion, Sustainable waste management, Urban governance and Municipal finance and Smart cities, participating cities attending will have the opportunity to meet other key decision makers and policy planners to comprehend the latest urban infrastructure developments in India and Gujarat, as well as access exclusive key note sessions and discussions on challenges and way forward for inclusive urban growth and development.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
