Chandigarh’s People’s Biodiversity Register to Document Green Wealth
ICLEI South Asia is developing the People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) of Chandigarh, with support from the Union Territory’s Department of Forests and Wildlife. Mandated as per the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, the PBR documents the biodiversity and traditional ecological knowledge of an area.
To this end, the city’s rich biodiversity was documented during a field visit. Detailed discussions have also been carried out with an array of stakeholders (such as farmers, vaids, people involved in the rearing of animals, and officials) to record the traditional knowledge. The collected data is being incorporated in the specified 32 formats to develop the PBR of Chandigarh.
