Himachal Pradesh Showcases Electric Mobility Vision at Republic Day 2026
26 January 2026, Shimla: As Himachal Pradesh continues to make steady progress in enhancing electric mobility and Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure, its journey was proudly showcased during the 77th Republic Day celebrations at the historic Ridge Maidan, Shimla. On this occasion, the Transport Department of Himachal Pradesh, in collaboration with ICLEI South Asia, presented an impressive EV initiative tableau, reflecting the state’s strong commitment towards clean and sustainable transport.
The celebrations were graced by Hon’ble Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla as the Chief Guest, along with Hon’ble Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh; former Chief Minister Hon’ble Jai Ram Thakur; PWD Minister Hon’ble Vikramaditya Singh; Hon’ble Mr. Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh; Hon’ble Mayor Surinder Chauhan; Hon’ble Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, legislators, senior civil and police officers, and representatives from the armed forces.
The tableau highlighted the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) pilot project established at the Transport Department premises that uses solar energy to charge electric vehicles and stores excess power in batteries, ensuring reliable and clean electricity for EV charging even during night-time or power outages. This innovation is particularly useful for Himachal’s remote areas, where power availability can be challenging. The tableau also addressed and dispelled common myths about EV performance in mountainous terrain, while spreading awareness about its benefits and government initiatives.
Key policy measures including the state’s 40% subsidy for converting 1,000 ICE taxis into electric taxis, were showcased. The tableau announced the induction of 297 electric buses into the HRTC fleet, reinforcing the government’s efforts to make public transport cleaner and more efficient.
The Shimla Municipal Corporation presented a tableau highlighting the adoption of electric vehicles in the city’s solid waste management freight, instilling confidence in the city’s commitment to sustainable urban services. These vehicles were introduced as a pilot project under a CSR initiative, supported by ICLEI South Asia and the Himachal Pradesh Directorate of Transport.
The initiative of promoting e-mobility through a Republic Day tableau was widely appreciated by dignitaries and delegates. It successfully conveyed Himachal Pradesh’s vision of becoming a green and sustainable state, reinforcing the government’s strong commitment to clean energy, climate action, and a resilient future.
