Better Air Quality Conference 2014

Recognizing that clean air and sustainable transport are essential to a livable society in Asia, the "Integrated Conference of BAQ (Better Air Quality) 2014 and Intergovernmental 8th Regional EST Forum in Asia" will be taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 19-21 November 2014. The event will be co-organized by the Ministry of Transport of Sri Lanka, The Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy of Sri Lanka, Ministry of the Environment of Japan, United Nations Centre for Regional Development, and Clean Air Asia, supported by ICLEI South Asia and in partnership with the Asian Development Bank, German International Cooperation (GIZ), and World Bank.
This conference highlights the need for innovative and smart solutions (policy, institution, technology and financing) that significantly reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases from energy, industry, transport, and area sources, and ensure a safe, equitable, environment and people-friendly transport system by accelerating the shift towards more environmentally sustainable transport (EST) in Asian cities and countries.
The Integrated Conference is a 3-day conference with plenary sessions, breakout sessions, country round tables, posters, exhibition, social events and launches. Pre-events are organized by different supporting organizations as training courses, workshops or field trips/site visits. The Integrated Conference is expected to bring together a thousand policymakers, technical experts, practitioners and industry leaders from around the region for Asia’s leading event on air quality, covering key sectors of transport, energy, industry and climate change, with a particular emphasis on government policies and measures. About 800 participants are estimated to participate in the Integrated Conference of BAQ 2014 and 8th Regional EST Forum in Asia from more than 35 countries worldwide, with one-third coming from outside Asia.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
