Biodiversity Summit 2014 Draft Declaration now open for comment!

The 2014 “Biodiversity Summit for Cities and Subnational Governments" will be held in support of, and in parallel with, the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) from 12-14 October 2014. The event will be organised by ICLEI and the Secretariat of the CBD, in partnership with the hosts, the Republic of Korea and the Provincial Government of Gangwon (South Korea). At the 2014 Biodiversity Summit, a key output will be the Gangwon / Pyeongchang Declaration on Cities and Subnational Governments for Biodiversity. The draft of the Gangwon/Pyeongchang Declaration is now open for comment and input from individuals, leading biodiversity organisations, and local and subnational governments from around the world.
Please download the draft Declaration from the ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center website HERE . Please send your comments to Shela Patrickson, Manager of ICLEI’s Cities Biodiversity Center, by 26 September 2014. These comments will then be collated, considered and incorporated to create a final draft of the Declaration. This final draft will then be presented at the beginning of the Biodiversity Summit, and there will be the opportunity for last inputs and suggestions over the event, including a short session at the end of the first day. The Declaration will then be updated and finalised, to be presented in the closing session of the Biodiversity Summit.
The Summit will convene hundreds of representatives from local, subnational and national governments to strengthen multi-level cooperation in support of the Strategic Plan of the CBD (2011-2020) and its Aichi Targets. It will build on the ground-breaking outcomes of previous Biodiversity Summits focused on the local level and CBD COPs, with a view to strengthening the links between levels of government and across governmental sectors in the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
This summit will resound the success of the Cities for Life Summit 2012, held in parallel to the CBD COP 11 on 15-16 October in Hyderabad, India, which brought together more than 500 participants, including about 150 city representatives from 45 countries, 60 city and sub-national leaders (governors, mayors, deputy mayors, and commissioners), as well as delegates from UN agencies, science, business, national, and international organizations. The Summit, with an aim to foster and unite local action for biodiversity, was organised by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity in collaboration with the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Government of India, at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
