Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation in Urbanising India

19 February 2018

A conference on ‘Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation in Urbanising India’ is being organised by Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) and ICLEI South Asia at National Agriculture Science Complex, Pusa, New Delhi on the 6th of March, 2018.

This is a stakeholder engagement event to disseminate the insights on urbanisation in South Asia generated through the ESPA programme, which was funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Department for International Development (DFID), and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

ICLEI – the leading global network of more than 1,500 cities, towns and regions committed to building a sustainable future – is pleased to support the ESPA programme in disseminating the findings to an Indian audience on this important and timely topic.

ESPA is a global interdisciplinary research programme that aimed to give decision-makers and natural resource users the evidence they need to address the challenges of sustainable ecosystem management and poverty reduction. The programme was developed by the UK government in response to the findings of the 2005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment that substantial gains in human well-being in recent decades have been achieved at the expense of high and often irreversible levels of ecosystem degradation. Programme activities will draw to a close in March 2018 hence a range of dissemination activities are now underway to ensure that insights arising from the ESPA programme are left in the hands of people and organisations who can take them forward – to benefit poor people in the Global South – beyond the life of the programme.

An overview of ESPA evidence and learnings on how to effectively harness ecosystem services in peri-urban areas (transitional zones where changes in land use pattern and occupations are transforming the rural hinterland into semi-urban areas) to create more resilient and sustainable cities in ways that are pro-poor and inclusive will be presented and discussed in the event.

This interactive event has been structured with presentations from ESPA and partners to summarise findings, and panel discussions to get reflections from national, state and city governments in India on these issues.

This event will bring together scientists and academics, researchers, development professionals, planners, elected representatives, government departments and peri-urban community members.
