Highlights of day 1 at Resilient Cities 2014

30 May 2014

The Resilient Cities 2014 Congress started today with a strong call for sustainable urbanization and adaptation. ICLEI President Mr. David Cadman formally opened the Congress with keynotes from Mayor Juergen Nimptsch of the City of Bonn, as well as Ms Tania Rödiger-Vorwerk – Deputy Director of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales also delivered his remarks via a video message in which he emphasised the opportunities that an integrated approach and city-regional food systems can have for ecosystem services, resource-use efficiency and recycling in sustainable cities

The need for this integrated approach is now urgent and that is why meetings such as this are vitally important in order to articulate fully the vision and help establish ways to build the evidence base and galvanize the wheels of change. So I can only congratulate ICLEI for their leadership in this area over the past few years." – HRH Prince of Wales.

The South Asian region is represented by ICLEI South Asia staff: Emani Kumar, Executive Director, ICLEI South Asia and ICLEI Deputy Secretary General; Sunandan Tiwari, Deputy Executive Director; Ritu Thakur, Senior Project Officer; as well as a number of city representatives: Tikender Singh Panwar, Deputy Mayor of Shimla, India; Shamim Al Razi, Mayor of Singra, Bangladesh; Md Fayzul Karim Moyun; Mayor of Moulvibazar, Bangladesh; Tejas Shah, Health Officer, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, India; and Ms Seema Redkar, Researcher, Mumbai. Emani Kumar, during his keynote speech for ‘ICLEI and Its Resilient City Agenda: Setting the Congress Scene’ highlighted how ICLEI has already been working with 150 cities worldwide to help them with climate adaptation.
