ICLEI’s delegation at the 7th World Urban Forum

ICLEI First Vice President Martha Delgado, ICLEI Vice President Mary Jane Ortega, ICLEI South American Secretariat Director, Florence Laloe, ICLEI EcoMobility Program Manager, Santosh Kodukula, Mayor Wansu-Park of Changwon, the Chair of the EcoMobility Alliance and Commissioner of Nashik, India, Mr. Sanjay Khandare, who also gave a presentation on the pilot project activities for the project "Operationalisation of Nexus approaches in Nashik city" being carried out in the city at the networking event “Urban NEXUS: strengthening inter-sectoral linkages and crossing municipal boundaries for integrated resource-efficiency”; represented ICLEI at the Seventh session of the World Urban Forum, which took place from 5-11 April in the city of Medellín, Colombia.
At the 7th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF7)convened in Medellin, Colombia, in addition to numerous events, ICLEI announced its commitment to move forward with Istanbul Water Consensus, joined forces with global partners on a new collaboration on Urban Resilience, and provided inputs in the consultations of United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA), UNHabitat Cities and Climate Change Initiative Advisory Committee and Cities Workstream of the UN Climate Summit to be held on 23 September 2014, and preparations toward HABITATIII conference to be convened in 2016.
Participants convened at the city’s exposition center, Plaza Mayor, for six days of discussions examining the conference’s theme "Urban Equity in Development – Cities for Life". In addition to serving as a prime opportunity to discuss the state of our cities today, the Seventh session of the World Urban Forum (WUF7) also came out to be central in substantively feeding into the preparation processes of the Post 2015 Development Agenda and into the review of the urban agenda in Habitat III in 2016. The Forum also lead a global effort advocating for sustainable and equitable urban development, and advancing its placement on the political and media agenda.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
