Launches, partnerships and commitments – ICLEI World Congress 2015 witnessed it all!

23 April 2015

The ICLEI World Congress 2015, held in Seoul, Korea from 8-12 April, has been, as of now, the biggest forum discussing the development of urban sustainability in 2015 worldwide. The congress welcomed over 2,500 participants from over 75 countries. There were over 37 sessions, and 10 MoUs signed by ICLEI during the Congress. It has offered ICLEI members and delegates the chance to highlight their achievements, to connect with partners, and to learn from each other. It has also served as a landmark occasion for local sustainability efforts in the run-up to the crucial climate negotiations in Paris in December 2015, and has raised the ambitions of the post-2015 development agenda through the globalization of transformative local sustainability actions.

A wide number of pre, post and side events were organised and coordinated with partners. It is hoped that this success will set an example for future congresses, where the aim will be to encourage as many partners to set up satellite events as possible, and maximise the possibility for networking.

This World Congress witnessed myriad launches, few of them being:

The importance of partnership prevailed as Yolanda Kakabadse, President of WWF, gave a clear and urgent speech about the importance of the WWF-ICLEI partnership in ensuring that the concept of a city can be reinvented, and a global transition towards a sustainable future can take place. She highlighted why the action of local government is so important, what a partnership between WWF and ICLEI means, and how this can be successfully implemented to ensure we can all enjoy a future where we live well in harmony with nature. The numerous partnerships that emerged during the World Congress can be found here

In the penultimate part of the plenary talk, the ICLEI Global Executive Committee Members and ICLEI Council Members presented the ICLEI strategic plan for 2015-2021, which is an extension of the commitment for ICLEI members, and provides a framework for offices and services to members, as well as outlining the role ICLEI aims to play in the world.

Final words were given by Joan Clos, Executive Director of UN-Habitat and Won Soon Park, Mayor of Seoul Metropolitan Government, Republic of Korea, closed the session. The search for the location for the next ICLEI World Congress in 2018 has already begun.

Highlights from the entire event are now available through the ICLEI World Congress 2015 Summary Pack. We hope that you find it useful for reporting on your participation at the congress.
