Local and Regional Governments Day

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is organising a ‘Local and Regional Governments Day’ in partnership with ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, on the 7th of September, 2019. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is also supporting this event, which will be attended by mayors from India and across the globe.
The event is part of the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP14), which will take place from the 2nd to the 13th of September, 2019 at the India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida, India.
The ‘Local and Regional Governments Day’ aims to provide a unique platform to key stakeholders, especially policy makers and local and regional governments to come together and deliberate upon actions to tackle land degradation. It will be a great opportunity for Indian cities to interact with their global peers to understand the linkage between land degradation and urbanisation, and the solutions needed to address this pressing issue.
About 100 to 150 delegates are expected to attend the event, including about 40 to 50 mayors and senior city government officials from India as well as many other countries.
The outcomes of this dialogue will feed into the High Level Roundtable, scheduled to be held on the 9th of September, 2019 at the COP14 session on “Rural and Urban Communities: failing or flourishing together”.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
