Mayors commit to humanizing urban EcoMobility in Suwon

Giving public spaces back to citizens and providing them with green, active and integrated ecomobile transport options are the main message drawn at the EcoMobility 2013 Suwon Congress, that attracted 500 participants from 40 countries representing 66 local governments. Set in Suwon, South Korea, the congress opened the month-long EcoMobility World Festival – a unique real-time social experiment where citizens move away from cars and realize the possibility of living and travelling green in their neighborhoods. The event was jointly organized by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, the city of Suwon and UN-Habitat.
Mr Ashok Bhattacharjee, Director of the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Center, Delhi Development Authority, had the chance to present to the congress participants the numerous integrated transport actions being undertaken by the city of Delhi, including a public pilot bicycle sharing system and the planning for transit oriented development around Delhi metro stations. The South Asian region was represented also by the Chief Environmental Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan Council as well as representatives from Dhaka Roads and Highways Department. Indian based organizations such as the Center for Green Mobility, Clean Air Asia, Embarq India and Mumbai Environmental Social Network shared additional experiences from the various sustainable transport projects currently carried out in Indian cities.
While the congress is now over, the Festival will continue until the end of September – during the whole month, the historic area of Haenggung-dong has been made car-free so that the 4,300 residents can explore the possibilities of an eco-mobile lifestyle. The Festival will welcome more than 5,000 international visitors, mayors, leading research specialists, mobility solution providers and more than 200 other participants from 20 different countries

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
