Nantes World Mayors Summit on Climate Change opens

Today sees the start of the Nantes World Mayors Summit, a two-day event held under the patronage of French President Francois Hollande at which leaders will lend their support to a declaration calling for greater cooperation with all levels of government, and accelerated local level access to international financing frameworks to fund climate actions. Cities are best placed to mitigate the effects of climate change, and it is vital that they have the resources to implement effective and innovative actions. The event will gather over 100 mayors from 30 countries.
The event is supported by French Prime-minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and will see high-level representatives from national governments, the business community, non-governmental and international organisations and the media. Confirmed attendees include George Ferguson, Mayor of Bristol (United Kingdom), James Nxumalo, Mayor of Durban (South Africa), Philippe de Fontaine Vive Curtaz, Vice-President, European Investment Bank (EIB) and many others. The South Asian region is represented by a strong delegation of city leaders coming from India (Panjim, Nagpur and Delhi), Pakistan (Quetta), Sri Lanka (Matale and Kurunegala), Nepal (Kathmandu) and Maldives (Male).
A high-level dialogue on financing local climate action will be held today, followed by the concluding plenary of the ECOCITY World Summit 2013. On Saturday the Nantes Declaration of Mayors and Subnational Leaders on Climate Change will be adopted. Nantes will also provide their perspective on advancing local climate action in light of the UNFCCC COP in 2015, in Paris (France). Finally, a Forum will be held with Dr. Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of Global Environment Facility (GEF). ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
- Organization of conferences, seminars, training courses tailored to the needs of local government experts.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
