Spreading the sustainability color – ICLEI World Congress 2015

01 April 2015

City representatives around the world have taken it upon themselves to make their cities more sustainable and the future of their people more secure and safe. They have the responsibility to address the current global trends and developments affecting the urban world of tomorrow. Around the globe, thousands of inspiring actions have already been taken, but there is a need to set more ambitious targets, implement more transformative actions and foster stronger collaborations to ensure a sustainable urban future.

More than 1000 participants, 243 local and regional governments and around 150 ICLEI members will be present at the ICLEI World Congress 2015, to be held in Seoul, Korea on the 8-12 April 2015, to connect with leading cities, strengthen their decision making, gain international recognition and to look ahead to COP21. The Congress, spread over 5 days and 45 sessions and plenaries, will comprise of inspiring discussion on sustainable solutions for an urban future. Top performing cities will showcase their most successful initiatives, innovative policies and exceptional results while testing out the wide range of ICLEI tools and services available to local governments. Participants will not only be able to learn hands-on experiences and practical solutions, but also explore Seoul’s world class initiatives on the ground through Mobile Workshops.

Numerous essential topics will be discussed and brought to the forefront. Some of them being:

The Congress will witness over 100 esteemed speakers who will share the most innovative practices and pioneering solutions to demonstrate that a transition to a globally sustainable future is possible, such as Wonsoon Park, Mayor of Seoul; Yolanda Kakabadse, President, WWF International; Arab Hoballah, UNEP; George Ferguson, Mayor of Bristol; Limin Hee, Centre for Livable Cities; Aniruddha Dasgupta, WRI and many more

The congress will also see the adoption of the Seoul Declaration – a key outcome document that underlines the priority actions for sustainable urban development taken by local and regional leaders in the next years.  It will also see over 25 new project and network launches, around 20 new partnerships, and major global announcements on existing initiatives such as the Compact of Mayors and the Durban Adaptation Charter.

2015 is the perfect time for local governments to come together and establish how to build on the progress of recent years, and how to meet the challenges that we face,” said ICLEI Secretary General Gino Van Begin. He continued: “Now is our chance to spread the best practices and successes of ICLEI Members around the world, inspire each other to achieve more and ACT NOW towards a fully sustainable urban future.
