Uniting towards Urban resilience in Asia-Pacific

23 February 2015

It is significant to use our collective rights to build a universal resilient future”

  – Richard Friend, Director, ISET International.

The days from 11-13 February 2015 marked the beginning of a revolution in the history of Asia-Pacific’s resilience building process. More than 300 participants from around 30 countries and more than 100 cities came together at Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2015 in high-level plenaries, technical sessions and bilateral meetings to dialogue and collaborate on various aspects of urban resilience and the need to move towards building a more resilient future.

The Congress, organised by ICLEI South Asia, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the World Mayor’s Council on Climate Change, covered myriad themes such as financing mechanisms, green growth, regional cooperation, Urban Nexus, Climate Compatible Development, linkages to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and more.

A strongly emerging discussion at the congress was that ‘people should be at the core of building urban resilience’ with sub-discussions on protecting and involving the urban poor in resilient building actions, and acknowledging and building on the critical role that women play.

ICLEI, being the world’s leading network of over 1,000 cities, towns and metropolises, believes that cities are the heart of national and global development. Any development aimed at bringing about a universal change, has to begin at the city level.

We have to localize Urban Sustainable Development Goals. It is important to unpack national goals to first meet local priorities.

 – Mariko Sato, Chief, UNHABITAT

The Congress brought forth many remarkable events – 16 new signatories for the Durban Adaptation Charter, the declaration of the Bangkok Call for Action, announcement of the next Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific to be held in Melaka, Malaysia and discussion of the key milestones and events for the year 2015 for the urban resilience agenda.

The Bangkok Call for Action will be delivered at the 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan where nations will decide on the disaster risk reduction framework for the next 10 years. It will also feed into the ongoing processes of finalizing the post-2015 development agenda, specifically the Sustainable Development Goals on cities and human settlements, the UN Climate Conference in Paris and the Habitat III in 2016.

Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2015 was a perfect example of people coming together from all across the region and beyond to work towards a common cause. We met, we shared, we collaborated, we discussed, we helped – all at Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2015 Congress.

The presentations and other proceedings of the Congress will be soon uploaded on the website.
