Workshop on GHG Platform – India: Waste and Industrial Emissions

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability South Asia, along with partners, is organising the GHG Platform – India’s roundtable discussion focussing on Waste (Solid Waste, Domestic Waste Water and Industrial Waste Water) and Industrial sectors on February 3, 2017 in Kolkata.
The GHG Platform – India is a collective civil society initiative providing an independent estimation and analysis of India’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across key sectors such as energy, waste, industry, agriculture, livestock, forestry and land-use and land-use change sectors. The platform is a joint effort of institutions such as Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Centre for Study of Science, Technology & Policy (CSTEP), ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia (ICLEI South Asia), Vasudha Foundation, and World Resources Institute (WRI) India in addition to a few sectoral experts in their individual capacity. The platform was jointly conceptualised by Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation and Vasudha Foundation, and is supported by Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.
The platform currently features national estimates for GHG emissions from 2007-2012 accounting CO2, CH4 and N2O gases. A brief hand out with the outcomes and analysis of these emission estimates is attached herewith. A detailed report on the trend analysis for the emission estimates from 2007-2012 for different sectors is available at http://ghgplatformindia.org/publications . The teams are in the process of expanding the time series to 2005-14 and to further provide State-level emission estimates.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
- Organization of conferences, seminars, training courses tailored to the needs of local government experts.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
