In Memoriam – Ritu Thakur (1985 – 2024)

The ICLEI family has suffered a terrible loss with the untimely passing of our dear Ritu Thakur, a much valued and senior member of our team, on July 25, 2024. Ritu joined ICLEI South Asia in 2010, and had, over the years, inspired us with her spirit, enthusiasm and leadership. Her colleagues respected her for her excellent quality of work and thorough approach. But most of all, she will be missed for her warmth and her willingness to always lend a helping hand to whoever needed it.

Ritu was thoughtful and caring, and it was an absolute joy to work with her. We shall be always grateful for her significant contribution towards the growth of our organisation. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. Ritu will be sorely missed, and while grief is inconsolable, the fond memories will be unforgettable.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
