ICLEI signs partnership agreement for more sustainable water management

 

In an effort to boost the sustainable management of water at local and regional levels, ICLEI has formally partnered with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), UN-Habitat/Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), the World Water Council, the Daegu Gyeongbuk Development Institute and the National Committee of the 7th World Water Forum. The partnership was agreed in Marseille on 28 October 2014. The partners committed to work together to prepare the Local and Regional Authorities conference – part of the upcoming 7th World Water Forum in Daegu City and Gyeongbuk Province, Korea (12–17 April 2015) – and to support the continued implementation of the Istanbul Water Consensus.

 

With reference to the collaboration between international partner organizations and various consultations with local and regional authorities worldwide, a strategy will be developed regarding how more integrated approaches in water management can be better realized on the ground. The strategy will be launched at the Local and Regional Authorities conference, which is organized by the ICLEI Korea Office and will take place in Gyeongju City on 13–14 April 2015.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

Consultancy

Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
