In the approach to the Shakti Smart Cities Mission, the objective of ICLEI South Asia is supporting four Indian Smart Cities through technical advisory in building their capacity to develop action plans based on Smart city plans on both Urban transport and Built Environment which provides guidance of expansion of projects of Area Based development to pan city level to build an approach which can feed into ongoing efforts of smart city program.
ICLEI – SA together with its partners SGA architects worked with and supported 4 Indian smart cities of Udaipur, Gwalior, Vizag and Jaipur during 2015-16 during an earlier grant with SSEF. Engagements with the city and state governments during implementing this grant provided for close insight into existing gaps and needs that require addressing as the cities proceed into implementing their smart city proposals. After receiving a positive feedback from the cities, the “Supporting Sustainable Urban Transport and Built Environment in four Indian Smart cities” project was awarded to ICLEI South Asia in February 2017 for providing handholding support to Indian cities.
The project aims to deliver city scale action plans under transport and built environment for four Smart Cities The primary intended outcome of the project is to build capacity of city level authorities for smart built environment approach thus achieve the sustainable transport targets and promote green and efficient buildings. It further focused to provide handholding support and build state level preparedness to cities for benefit of Smart city program.
ICLEI– SA has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Udaipur Municipal Corporation, Gwalior Municipal Corporation and Vizag Municipal Corporation for providing advocacy and research in sustainable transportation and building energy efficiency. To initiate the project activities, the project team continued the discussion and took on the activities going on with the earlier cities.
