Resilient development pathway

The resilient development pathway anticipates, prevents, absorbs and recovers from shocks and stresses, especially those brought about by rapid environmental technological, social and demographic change.

Through this pathway, local and regional governments make resilience a core part of municipal strategies and prepare for new risks and impacts, taking into account the rights and needs of vulnerable sections of society. They continuously strengthen essential systems, alleviating the burden on people and the environment. They pursue a transparent and inclusive approach that will enhance trust in institutions and the processes that support them.

Projects

CDKN Knowledge Accelerator Project

Established in 2010, CDKN is a demand-led network that helps developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean to achieve climate-compatible development goals. Through this project, CDKN is shifting from knowledge-generating and technical assistance to knowledge brokering, since a lot of information on climate adaptation is being generated. It aims to create an enabling environment for implementation and scaling climate and development actions in order to drive inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient development, and enhance the quality of life for the poorest and most vulnerable to climate change.

City Resilience Index

ICLEI South Asia in collaboration with Arup and Municipal Corporation of Shimla has created a Resilience Profile using the City Resilience Index (CRI) in Shimla. The project was undertaken in 2015 with all the support from the Rockefeller Foundation. The main objectives of the CRI are to improve Shimla’s understanding of the range of systems and factors that contribute to the resilience of the city as a whole, and also to establish a benchmark from which to track the future progress of the city.

Sensitization Programme for Kolkata Municipal Corporation Councilors and Members of Mayor-in-Council on Climate Change

The aim of this project is to conduct a sensitization program for councilors and Members of the Mayor-in-council of Kolkata Municipal Corporation focusing on low carbon and climate-resilient development of Kolkata.

Nashik Sustainable Urban Habitat Action Plan

As part of the GIZ Indo-German Environment Partnership (IGEP), Nashik Municipal Corporation is in the process of developing a city-specific Sustainable Urban Habitat Action Plan (SUHAP), in line with the Government of India’s National Mission on Sustainable Habitat (NMSH). GIZ-IGEP and ICLEI South Asia will be providing technical assistance to Nashik Municipal Corporation and other relevant departments for the preparation of SUHAP, which will address both issues of mitigation and adaptation.

AsianCitiesAdapt – Impacts of Climate Change in Target Cities in India and the Philippines and Local Adaptation Strategies

AdaptCap works with coastal communities to assess and reduce the impact of climate change, with a focus on developing local adaptation plans through liaisons between community organizations and local governments.

Awareness Programme on climate change for West Bengal ULB’s

Climate change is a reality and internationally a lot of activities are being planned and measures undertaken in various sectors to address the same. Fast-growing urban settlements are highly vulnerable to its impacts as more than 75% of the world’s energy is consumed in the cities.

AdaptCap – Strengthening adaptation capacities and minimizing risks of vulnerable coastal communities in India

AdaptCap works with coastal communities to assess and reduce the impact of climate change, with a focus on developing local adaptation plans through liaisons between community organizations and local governments.

Analysis of National and Subnational Disaster Loss and Damage Databases – Establishing a Linkage to Climate Change Impacts to Strengthen Local Urban Resilience Plans

UNDP, through varying levels of support, is instrumental in the development of disaster loss and damage databases and associated institutionalization at the national and subnational levels in over 25 locations. Online disaster loss and damage databases are available for several countries in the South and Southeast Asian region. It is of critical value to these countries to assess and analyze information in these databases within the context of local climate change trends and impacts to explore inherent linkages between climate change and disaster losses.

Subnational Learning Programme: Planning to Implementation

Following a highly successful first phase of the subnational learning program, CDKN and 5 offices of ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability have successfully partnered for the second phase, running from early 2015 to late 2016. It presents an excellent opportunity to build on and enhance the learning achieved in the first phase of the partnership.

Climate Change Adaptation Project Preparation and Financing in Urban India

ICLEI South Asia, in collaboration with USAID, ADAPT the Asia Pacific, and Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), is now laying the path for helping cities move from developing climate resilience strategies to project preparation and gaining access to finance by introducing the Climate Change Adaptation Project Preparation and Financing in Urban India (ADAPT Finance). This project builds on the Climate Resilience Strategies (CRS) developed for cities under the Rockefeller Foundation-supported Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) program. The ADAPT Finance project, which is currently in its first phase, aims at reassessing the interventions suggested in the CRS, prioritizing the infrastructure projects, and facilitating project preparation and linkages to financing opportunities.

Urban Resilience and Informality

ICLEI South Asia and ICLEI South East Asia, in partnership with Nashik Municipal Corporation, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, Denpasar Municipality, and Local Government of Quezon City has successfully launched the Misereor funded project on Urban Resilience and Informality in January 2016. The project aims to assess and disseminate key lessons on resilience building and inclusive governance, with a focus on residents in informal settlements, to local, sub-national and national governments in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Improvement of Cooperation, Dialogue Process, and Knowledge Exchange between Actors Involved in Strengthening Urban Climate Resilience in Cities in Bangladesh Climate Resilient Inclusive Smart Cities (CRISC)

The project aims to build the capacity of local governments, decision-makers, and policymakers for climate-resilient and socially inclusive urban planning and development.

BM22-010 KASpaces Champions of Sustainable Development

The KASpaces SDG Ambassador program provides an opportunity to promote SDG leadership at all levels of governance in the targeted countries. The project assists in assessing the level of awareness of elected representatives and recognize their leadership and commitments toward SDG implementation by appointing them as a ‘KASpaces SDG Ambassador’. KASpaces SDG Elected Representative Ambassador Program includes interviews and awareness generation on SDG of selected elected representatives (mainly young).
