Climate Footprint Project

Pathway: Low emission development

The Climate Footprint Project supports state and regional governments to improve their greenhouse gas emissions tracking and reduction efforts. In order to support the development of regional greenhouse gas inventories, The Climate Group, as Secretariat of the Under2 Coalition, is leading a consortium of partners to provide direct support and training to Pernambuco (Brazil), Chhattisgarh and West Bengal (India), Baja California, Jalisco and Yucatán (Mexico), and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). ICLEI will provide guidance to the four target countries, exploring approaches to support vertically integrated climate action through dialogues and capacity building on multi-level governance and reporting.

  • Globally, the project aims to provide support and guidance to the target countries and explore approaches to support vertically integrated climate action through dialogues and capacity building on multi-level governance and reporting.
  • The project in India intends to provide technical assistance and training to the subnational governments (States and Provinces) to enhance their MRV capacity and knowledge.
  • Through Multi-Level Governance (MLG) dialogues the project intends to align existing MRV systems or elements; at all three levels of government, in order to make them more efficient and thus support the implementation of the NDC, with a view to increasing the government’s ambition.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
