CapaCITIES: Udaipur’s Green Mobility Zone to Feature New Age Solutions
A Green Mobility Zone (GMZ) is being developed in the walled city of Udaipur, under the CapaCITIES project funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The GMZ is proposed to be a designated area into which only passenger electric vehicles (besides local private vehicles) would be allowed entry during the market/designated hours in a phased manner, and electric freight vehicles would require priority access.
The project will provide pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and new age clean micro-mobility and shared mobility options in an endeavour to reduce congestion and ambient pollution.
In this regard, a stakeholder meeting was organised on the 1st of April 2022 under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Deputy Mayor and in the presence of dignitaries and senior officials of Udaipur Municipal Corporation, Regional Transport Office, Udaipur State Transmission Corporation Limited, and traffic police to kick-start a technical study in the city. The project’s technical team will conduct primary surveys to prepare a feasibility report and model for GMZ under the study. All departments have approved the work plan and have extended their support for the same. A separate meeting was held with the District Collector and Magistrate to update him about the project and to get his valuable input.
In a significant development, the district-level transport committee of Udaipur, under the chairmanship of the District Collector and Magistrate and in the presence of committee members Mr. Gulab Chand Kataria (MLA Urban), Mr. Govind Singh Taunk (Mayor), and other senior officials like the Municipal Commissioner and Smart City CEO, approved the formation of a sub-committee to speed up the overall progress of the project and to provide other administrative support to it.
