Catch Them Young: Awareness Event for Chennai School Students Highlights Challenge of Air Pollution
The Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC) conducted an awareness programme on air pollution on the 6th of September 2022. The event was targeted towards students and took place at the Government Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar, Chennai, on the eve of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies.
During the event, held under the theme “Air we share”, experts from TNGCC conducted interactive sessions for more than 200 enthusiastic students on air pollution, its causes and effects, the solutions to tackle it, and the role of individual responsibility in environmental protection and solid waste management. The programme was sponsored by TNGCC and the office of the Member of Parliament from Chennai South, Dr. Thamizhachi Thanga Pandian, who was also the chief guest at the event. Eco-friendly Manjappai (a ubiquitous yellow bag) backpacks and note pads, along with seed pencils were distributed amongst the students that attended.
Dr. Pandian spoke about the significance of nature conservation and the need to maintain air quality for healthy living. Additionally, she expressed appreciation for the TNGCC’s initiative to conduct an awareness programme for the students. In his address, Mr. Sreeram Srinivasan, Chief Project Director, TNGCC-PMU, briefed the audience about the climate change initiatives being undertaken by the Government of Tamil Nadu through TNGCC. The event ended on a high note with saplings being planted by the chief guest within the school premises.
