Floating Solar Power in Coimbatore Boosts Clean Energy Ambitions
A delegation from the Embassy of Switzerland in India and Bhutan visited the newly completed Floating Solar Power Plant on Periyakulam Lake in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on 25 November 2025. The visit highlighted Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation’s (CCMC) commitment to driving innovative clean energy solutions and strengthening local climate action.
The floating solar installation—Tamil Nadu’s first to be deployed by a municipal corporation on a waterbody—was implemented by CCMC and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Embassy of Switzerland to India, under the Capacity Building Project on Low Carbon and Climate Resilient City Development in India (CapaCITIES) Phase II. The initiative was also supported through the Government of Tamil Nadu’s Namakku Naame Thittam scheme. ICLEI South Asia serves as an implementing partner under the SDC-funded CapaCITIES Project.
With a capacity of 154 kilowatt-peak, the plant is expected to generate approximately 0.23 million kWh of electricity annually, resulting in emissions reductions of nearly 165 tCO₂e per year. This is equivalent to powering 100 households, taking 110 cars off the road, or matching the annual carbon sequestration capacity of six mature trees. Over its projected 25-year lifetime, the system will collectively produce about 5.7 million kWh and reduce an estimated 4,100 tCO₂e.
The project marks a significant milestone for Coimbatore, while also highlighting Tamil Nadu’s broader clean energy transition ambition. ICLEI South Asia is proud to support the state in advancing innovative clean energy solutions and remains committed to strengthening climate action and helping cities pioneer scalable, resilient, and impactful interventions.
