PROMISE team meets in Warangal to identify sector of engagement and initiate next steps
ICLEI South Asia, with partner Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), recently conducted a two-day visit to Warangal, Telangana to meet city officials of Warangal Municipal Corporation and Collectorate and identify a priority sector of engagement PROMotion of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen Local Governments (PROMISE) project in the city. Supported by European Commission, the project includes four cities, each of which will identify one of these as a priority sector of engagement: Mobility, Sewerage and Drainage, Water Supply, Green Spaces and Parks, and Solid Waste.
On February 3 and 4, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability and partners Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) came together to understand Warangal’s priorities and decide the further course of activities in the city. During the two-day meet, the project team briefed Ms. Shruti Ojha, the Commissioner who, on consultation, had identified “Green Spaces and Parks” sector for study under the project. This was followed by discussions with the Honorable Mayor Shri. Nannapaneni Narender and Secretary Mr. Nagaraja Rao. After a few consultations, it has been suggested to consider Shiva Nagar, a locality situated in three divisions – 9, 18 and 19 – for a pilot study. Besides, the team has also requested the Commissioner and Honorable Mayor to nominate a nodal officer for the project.
On the second day of the visit, the team, along with the Sanitary Inspector and a representative from ASCI, visited Shiva Nagar and identified three sites for further study. The sites are currently being used for cultural activities and celebration of Bathukamma festival organised during nine consecutive days in September and October, every year.
The site for pilot is under consideration and will be finalized soon.
