Singra Municipality Launches Voluntary Local Review Report
The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) report prepared for Singra city in Bangladesh was launched on the 28th of June by the Hon’ble Mayor of Singra Md. Zannatul Ferdous in an event held in the municipality. The VLR has been developed by Singra with technical support from ICLEI South Asia under the Climate and Development Knowledge Network -Knowledge Accelerator Programme, which is funded by the International Development Research Centre and the Royal Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mr. S.M. Samirul Islam, and Assistant Commissioner (Land), Singra, Natore, Md Al Imran were present on the occasion.
In his remarks at the event, Mr. Curt Garrigan, Chief, Sustainable Urban Development Section of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), said, “Singra’s VLR identifies clear agenda and understanding of how different projects are undertaken by the municipality, which contributes towards national goals as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” Md. Jubaer Rashid from ICLEI South Asia presented a summary of the VLR and highlighted its process, activities and the targets set for the city towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and prioritised SDGs.
With this VLR report Singra has committed to work on achieving various SDGs such as those on gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. The VLR helps the city’s efforts to localise SDGs and align its development vision with the 2030 Agenda, besides demonstrating Singra’s capacity to accelerate the pace of achieving the SDG targets of the national government.
