Students attend Urban Biodiversity workshop on International Biodiversity Day

As part of the national outreach activities under the INTERACT: Bio project, supported by The Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI), a workshop on Urban Biodiversity was organised in Delhi on the 22nd of May.
  
The event organised on International Biodiversity Day was held in collaboration with Department of Environment, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Combating Climate Change and was attended by college and school teachers and students.


  
Through the workshop, the participants were sensitised about the biodiversity in India, significance of urban biodiversity and steps they can take to conserve the same.

The participants were also provided a training on methods for development of campus biodiversity registers, which will then form a part of the People’s Biodiversity Register of the state of Delhi.
  
The event was very well received and marked high level of participation.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
