Workshop on Waste Management Focuses on Extended Producer Responsibility

The Project Management Unit of the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company organised a workshop ‘Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in plastics and packaging waste’ jointly with GIZ India in Chennai on the 26th of July 2022.

The workshop set the context with its EPR governance framework, which includes key actors, material and financial flow and accountability, for the participants who included representatives from the state pollution control board, producers, importers and brand owners (PIBOs), academic institutions, NGOs, and plastic waste processors. There was a session on implementation of the EPR framework in India, and a group session on policy compliance and traceability, stakeholder mapping and accountability of relevant stakeholders, plastics material flow, and financial flows in EPR. The workshop gave a comprehensive overview of EPR, drawbacks in and solutions for achieving the set annual target, the experiences of large-scale PIBOs, and the changes required in the current system to make it easier to streamline waste management.
