Rapid urbanization has put intense pressure on Cities, their infrastructure and the natural environment. Given the magnitude of the problem faced by Indian cities in terms of poor, inadequate and failing infrastructure related to urban housing for the poor, water supply, wastewater management, solid waste management, public lighting and other facilities, the Government of India has given priority to the development of public infrastructure and is supporting various programs and projects including the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to implement city level infrastructure development projects.
To review the status of improvement of urban services due to the impacts of these programs in Indian cities the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) in consultation with key stakeholders has developed Service Level Benchmarks (SLBs) for four key urban services. This initiative of the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India, is being undertaken with various partners like JICA, WSP, DFID, CEPT, ASCI, and GTZ. The urban services for which benchmarking will be done include:
- Water Supply
- Sewerage
- Strom-water drainage
- Solid waste management
