Training Session for Meerut Officials on Tackling Road Dust and Vehicular Pollution

ICLEI South Asia, organised a training session on April 17, 2023, in Meerut Municipal Corporation, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh to help the city officials and other stakeholders understand the influence of transportation emissions and road dust on air pollution. As per the discussions with Meerut Municipal Corporation officials, the traffic situation at Hapur Adda Chowk has been a constant source of problems for the city. Therefore, during the session, the suggestions and interventions that were proposed by ICLEI South Asia to solve the issue of road dust and vehicular pollution at Hapur Adda Chowk were discussed.

It was observed by experts that the road capacity at the Hapur Adda is enough for the demand of the city but activities such as roadside shops, vendors, encroachments, and e-rickshaw clusters prevent the smooth flow of traffic. The plan proposed during the meeting included design features such as symbolic dividers to solve the problem of mixed traffic. Policy and regulations level suggestions with a long–term and short-term approach such as drafting regulatory mechanisms for e-rickshaws – controlling numbers, ensuring registered products, etc were also deliberated upon.

An onsite training was also conducted at the Hapur Adda junction with the traffic police department officials to execute the strategies discussed as part of the Building City Leadership on Clean Air Action project which is supported by the Clean Air Fund.
