Under the CapaCITIES Project, supported by The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), an assessment is being made for the water quality and possibility of cleaning up the lakes within the city that are currently polluted due to the release of waste water from neighbouring areas. For this, a detailed assessment is being made for one lake – the Singanallur Tank in the city of Coimbatore.
A household level survey for 10% of the households (around 3000 households) in a portion of the catchment area of the Singanallur tank in Coimbatore was conducted to assess the situation of the sewerage connections and disposal of waste water into the natural drains that finally leads to the tank. In addition, six waste water and lake water samples were analysed for physical and chemical quality.
For the survey, an area of 500-Meter buffer area around the canal leading to the Singanallur lake was taken up. Field survey was conducted between 11th and 14th of September and 23rd and 24th of September. The Sanganur stream has a total length of 16.62034 km and the study area covered about 6.9 km with 500-meter area on both sides.
