Project Summary

The project aims to support the city of Rajkot to address extreme heat and rising cooling demand by commencing preparation of an Urban Cooling Action Plan and related capacity building, stakeholder coordination and matchmaking.

Main expected outcomes

Key objectives of the project are:

  • To examine, integrate and showcase ongoing programs related to urban cooling and extreme heat; examine the barriers faces in implementing these programs; propose new and integrated solutions to urban cooling and extreme heat in the city.
  • Prepare GIS mapping of city including buildings, land-use, urban heat, surface albedo and nature cover (green and blue).
  • Prepare key figures on city and ward level estimated cooling consumption, access to cooling, urban heat island and undertake Ward-level assessment of urban cooling and extreme heat and recommended solutions.
  • Planning guidelines to Rajkot for future area development or redevelopment to control urban heat island and cooling consumption.
  • Develop and showcase best practice document consisting case studies of
  1. Thermal comfort, cost and implementation of the IGBC certified 90 social housing buildings in Rajkot (focusing BEEP work)
  2. Extreme Heat Plan of Ahmedabad
