ICLEI South Asia has initiated a citywide tree census in Ichalkaranji, supported by the Ichalkaranji Municipal Corporation. The exercise aims to assess the current status of the city’s trees and understand changes since the previous tree census conducted in 2018.
Covering the entire city across all wards, the year-long exercise is expected to document nearly 3 lakh trees. To facilitate the on-ground survey, Ichalkaranji has been divided ecosystem-wise, with the same approach being followed during field data collection.
The tree census will capture key information on each tree, including its geo-coordinates, species, height, girth and canopy cover. The health status of individual trees will also be recorded, creating a comprehensive picture of the city’s existing tree cover and its condition.
The resulting data will provide the city with an overall understanding of the species present, their distribution across Ichalkaranji, and the growth and health parameters of individual trees. This information can serve as an important resource for future urban greening and plantation planning, helping the city identify where and what types of trees may be planted in the future.
