Butterfly Garden to Bring People Closer to Nature in Kochi

Subhash Park in Kochi, Kerala, is set to create a buzz by opening a nature interpretation centre, a pollinator garden and a herbal garden soon. These new attractions in the city are pilot projects aimed at connecting the urban population with biodiversity, an initiative by ICLEI South Asia under the INTERACT-Bio project, which is funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

The interpretation centre and live demonstration areas (pollinator garden and herbal garden) within the park will help to showcase the native biodiversity in Kochi. The planned pollinator garden also proposes to provide a suitable food base to native pollinator (butterfly and moth) species, which will help to increase their population and support in augmenting food production within the city.  The herbal garden and the nature interpretation centre will help visitors to understand and appreciate the diversity and significance of medicinal plants as well as biodiversity and ecosystem services, respectively.

A separate section in the park will focus on the backwaters and the ecosystem services they provide. The herbal and butterfly gardens are expected to be ready by December, and work on developing the nature interpretation centre will commence shortly.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
