Cities in Tamil Nadu to enforce energy efficient building code
ICLEI South Asia has just begun a new initiative to assess the capacity building needs of Tamil Nadu state cities to implement the national Energy Conservation Buildings Code (ECBC). The ECBC was launched by the Government of India under the Energy Conservation Act of 2001 and is applicable to all large commercial buildings. The ECBC is set to become mandatory in Tamil Nadu in 2012. Spanning the three largest Tamil Nadu cities of Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai, this assessment will be followed by a set of trainings for the city governments to enable them to effectively enforce the ECBC. This initiative is supported by the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation.
