EU-funded Project Ends with Fulfilled PROMISE

The European Union-supported “PROMOTION of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen Local Governments” project, which was implemented in four smart cities – Karnal, Ajmer, Jabalpur and Warangal -- has come to a close.

The three-and-a-half-year project’s major outcome -- the PROMISE tool -- was developed by the project team to assist municipalities in project prioritisation. The responses of the people, based on their needs and aspirations, along with the existing service levels and future plans of the urban local bodies were used to develop the tool.

The team assisted the city municipal corporations to strengthen their capacities, prioritise projects, improve the last mile connectivity and increase community participation with a focus on inclusivity. The project focused on the mobility sector in Karnal, the solid waste management sector in Ajmer, the sewerage sector in Jabalpur and the open spaces sector in Warangal.

The experiences and learnings from all project cities have been documented in reports. These reports discuss and analyse the sector-specific baseline scenario along with the results from the primary surveys, shared learning dialogues and sector-specific recommendations to the city. The city closure reports are:

• Promotion of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen (Mobility Sector – Learnings & Practices) Local Governments – Experiences from Karnal
• Promotion of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen (Solid Waste Management – Learnings & Practices) Local Governments – Experiences from Ajmer
• Promotion of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen (Sewerage Management – Learnings & Practices) Local Governments – Experiences from Jabalpur
• Promotion of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen (Open Spaces – Learnings & Practices) Local Governments – Experiences from Warangal

The project team has also developed a handbook for the PROMISE toolkit, titled ‘Promotion of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen Local Governments – A Guidebook to the Online Tool’.
