ICLEI South Asia Regional Executive Committee election: call for candidates

The election process for ICLEI South Asia’s new Regional Executive Committee or RexCom (2021 – 2024) is well underway. The RexCom represents ICLEI Membership from South Asia and makes decisions on policy to be applied in the region. It also designates a regional representative to the ICLEI Global Executive Committee (GexCom) from among its ranks.

Elected for a three-year term, the RexCom has five members and can have a certain number of special advisors. Each RexCom member will support one of ICLEI’s five development pathways of Low Emission Development, Resilient Development, Circular Development, Nature-Based Development, and Equitable and People-Centred Development. Two of the RexCom members are elected Chair and Vice-Chair.

We invite all eligible candidates to send in their applications by August 15, 2020. In order to be eligible to be a part of the RexCom, the candidate should preferably be an elected or appointed political leader from an eligible ICLEI Member within the region, and be willing to sign and act according to the Code of Honour. A list of candidates for the RexCom would be proposed from among candidacies received by the Regional Director and the ICLEI Secretary-General, after appropriate consultations with the incumbent RexCom, and/or Members in the region.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
