New case studies from South Asia showcase best practice from the region

This week, CDKN is launching a new case study series on best practice examples of climate compatible development in South Asia. The series explores themes related to finance, climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy and the empowerment of women.

In India, the city of Ahmedabad successfully raised funds through municipal bonds to finance climate-resilient urban development, including waste management, water supply, and other infrastructure projects.

The Bangladesh Bank is supporting the garment sector to become more sustainable through the launch of a $200 million Green Transformation Fund (GTF) in 2016 for the purchase of environmentally-friendly machinery.

In Maharashtra, India, a women-led climate-smart agriculture model is enhancing women’s livelihoods, incomes, and food security by promoting sustainable farming techniques, diversifying livelihoods, and improving water management systems.

The installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at a water treatment plant in Rajkot, India, has reduced greenhouse gas emissions and inspired the municipality to scale-up in other parts of the city.

An innovative rainwater harvesting technology in Gujarat, India, is improving the socio-economic circumstances of marginal women farmers by building their skills and giving them greater control over their natural and social environment.

In Dhundi, Gujarat, a farmer-led cooperative has helped raise incomes and reduce emissions through the installation of solar pumps for irrigation.

Women-led People’s Forums in Bangladesh are providing training for alternative livelihoods, reducing vulnerability to climate hazards, and raising women’s voices in local planning and decision-making.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
