People’s Biodiversity Register Project Begins in Goa

With support from Goa State Biodiversity Board, ICLEI South Asia has initiated a new project on development of People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) in 10 villages in Goa.

As a thematic support group, ICLEI South Asia will build the capacity and support the Biodiversity Management Committees in these villages to develop the People’s Biodiversity Registers.

A People’s Biodiversity Register is a legal document that is recognised by the Government of India. It provides an innovative decentralised approach to know, use and safeguard our biodiversity and traditional knowledge.

PBR also supports claims of local ownership of biodiversity and traditional knowledge. Extensive community based interactions and community led documentation surveys are being planned by ICLEI South Asia to develop these PBRs.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
