Stakeholder Consultation on Climate Resilience in Kakinada: A Collaborative Approach to Disaster-Resilient Development

ICLEI South Asia organized a stakeholder consultation meeting in Kakinada on 10 December 2024 under the ‘Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN): Accelerating Inclusive Action’ Programme. The Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) has developed the Climate Resilience City Action Plan (CRCAP) with technical assistance from ICLEI South Asia and support from C40. In response to valuable insights on the growing challenges of climate extremes, the city has proactively collaborated under the CDKN Programme for planning, implementation, and capacity-building on climate-induced disaster-resilient development, integrating gender-responsive, social inclusion and ecosystem-based approaches.
Ms. Bhawna, the Municipal Commissioner of KMC, convened and spearheaded the meeting, which was attended by the KMC Climate Core Team, various district and state departments, and civil society organisations.
The ICLEI South Asia team presented the process and key findings of the climate action plan. They also demonstrated how to assess disaster resilience using the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). The team highlighted the city’s progress and the efforts of relevant stakeholders and sought stakeholder input on transitioning to climate-induced disaster resilience.
Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) Accelerating Inclusive Action Programme is focussed on looking at different aspects of climate resilience and implementing locally led adaptation solutions in target countries. The collaborative efforts between ICLEI South Asia and the municipal stakeholders aim to chart a pathway for achieving just, transformative, ecosystem-based, and locally-led city disaster resilience.
