Framework for Urban Cooling Plan for Rajkot City, India

The project focuses on supporting Rajkot city to identify and implement interventions to check the urban heat island effect under the framework of an Urban Cooling Plan. The project is supported by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and implemented by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia (ICLEI SA) in close collaboration with the Rajkot Municipal Corporation. The project aims at carrying out technical assessments to study and analyze causes and factors leading to Urban Heat Island (UHI) in the city, followed by strategizing feasible interventions to create thermally comfortable environment for its citizens. This first of its kind study for Rajkot city provides a framework for a more comprehensive Urban Cooling Plan for Rajkot.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
